RJH Mixtape--Brick Cracker Soup
Maybe this is darker than usual? It’s hard to remain indifferent to the continued erosion of the values that my Republican father held dear (not to mention the values his more liberal son embraces).
Or, maybe it’s just that the mix starts with Circuit des Yeaux who also made my album of the month:
Circuit, which is basically Haley Fohr, is like Siouxsie meets Depeche Mode. So, Goth friends get your capes on. I don’t know how that voice comes from that body, but I’m glad it does.
Pay attention to the Schnittke (track 8). This is an arrangement to highlight the cello, but Schnittke’s string quartets are all worth hearing. He’s a Russian composer who seems to me the natural heir of Shostakovich.
Yazz Ahmed—it’s from her album A Paradise in the Hold. Best jazz album I’ve heard in a while. (Well, aside from Immanuel Wilkins’ Blues Blood, which is a pure monument.)
Takuro Okada: Apparently, this comes from the first of his work to be available outside of Japan. I’ve listened to everything available (I think) and am completely sold.
Hold strong. And, if you feel like it, make music that pushes back on the absurdity. This is a chapter in a very long book, but we are all writing, even as our pens remain poised.
